Overview
Spellbook is an AI assistant for drafting and reviewing contracts inside Microsoft Word. It suggests redlines, drafts clauses and flags terms to look at, without leaving the document. Spellbook says it is powered by OpenAI's GPT-5 and other large language models (about Spellbook).
For solicitors in England and Wales
Spellbook is sold outside North America and names UK users: Kennedys is rolling it out across its US and UK offices (Kennedys). Its list of data sources includes BAILII and legislation.gov.uk (data sources). Spellbook does not say, on the pages read, that it is built for contracts governed by English law, so check its suggestions against the firm's own precedents.
Pricing
Checked 29 September 2026. Spellbook publishes no price. Its pricing page says pricing depends on the number of team members on the licence and is given after a demo. A 7-day free trial is available.
Security and data

- Training. Spellbook has zero-data-retention agreements with OpenAI and Anthropic, and its terms say customer data sent to third-party models is not used to train them (security, terms). Spellbook itself may keep inputs and outputs for quality checks for up to 90 days.
- Where data is held. Spellbook stores and processes customer data with cloud providers in Canada and the United States (security). It states no UK or EU hosting option.
- Contract. For customers outside the US, Spellbook's terms are governed by the laws of Ontario (terms).
- Certifications. SOC 2 Type II (security).
Using it safely
- Client contracts sent to Spellbook leave the UK. Check that the transfer fits the firm's UK GDPR position before uploading personal data.
- A suggested redline is a suggestion. Paragraph 3.2 of the SRA Code of Conduct for Solicitors requires a competent service, so read each change as you would a trainee's mark-up.
