Claude
Anthropic's general-purpose assistant for drafting and reading long documents. Consumer plans may train on your chats unless you opt out; Team and Enterprise do not by default.
Overview
Claude is Anthropic's general-purpose AI assistant. It drafts, rewrites and summarises, and it can read long documents in a single conversation. Like any general assistant, it is not a legal database: it can state the law wrongly and cite authorities that do not exist.
Anthropic publishes legal plugins for Claude Cowork, its desktop agent. It announced the first in January 2026, describing it as reviewing documents, flagging risks and tracking compliance (Anthropic). The plugins are general tools; they do not give Claude a source of English law.
For solicitors in England and Wales
Claude is suited to reading and summarising material you already hold, comparing drafts and producing a first draft for you to edit. Check any statement of law or authority against an official source before relying on it.
As with ChatGPT, the plan decides how your data is treated. On Free, Pro and Max, Anthropic may train on your conversations unless you opt out. On Team and Enterprise it does not by default.
Pricing
Checked 29 September 2026. Anthropic's pricing page is in US dollars and excludes tax. Its help centre says pricing, currency and tax vary by region and that the local price is shown at claude.ai/upgrade; for a UK account that day, Pro was £18 a month including VAT, or £15 a month billed annually.
- Free: US$0.
- Pro: US$20 a month, or US$17 a month billed annually (US$200 up front).
- Max: from US$100 a month (Max 5x); Max 20x is US$200 a month.
- Team: for 2 to 150 seats. A Standard seat is US$20 a month billed annually or US$25 monthly; a Premium seat is US$100 annually or US$125 monthly.
- Enterprise: US$20 per seat a month billed annually, plus usage at API rates. The self-serve route needs at least 20 seats.

Security and data
Checked 29 September 2026 against Anthropic's own pages.
- Training. On Free, Pro and Max, Anthropic may use your chats to train its models unless you opt out in your privacy settings; chats flagged for safety review and feedback you submit can still be used (privacy policy). On commercial products, including Team and Enterprise, it does not train on your inputs or outputs by default (commercial training).
- Where data is held. Data is stored in the United States (server locations). The Claude apps offer no UK or EU storage option on any plan; European deployment is available only through AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud Vertex AI and Microsoft Foundry (regional compliance).
- Certifications. ISO/IEC 27001:2022, ISO/IEC 42001:2023 and SOC 2 Type I and Type II (certifications).
- Retention. On consumer plans, deleted chats are removed from back-end storage within 30 days; if you allow training, de-identified data may be kept for up to five years (consumer retention).
Using it safely
- Paragraph 6.3 of the SRA Code of Conduct for Solicitors requires you to keep clients' affairs confidential. The Law Society's guidance says not to put confidential data into a free online tool where you have no relationship with the vendor other than use.
- Keep client and matter details off consumer plans. For client work, the firm's question is whether Team or Enterprise meets its needs, and whether US storage is acceptable for that data under UK GDPR.
- You remain responsible for the output: paragraph 3.2 of the Code requires a competent service, and paragraph 3.5 keeps a supervisor accountable for work done through others.
