Clio

Clio is cloud software for running a law firm: matters, contacts, time recording, billing and documents. It is a practice management system with AI features built in, not an AI research tool. Clio sells a separate product, Clio Work, for legal research and drafting.

Clio has a UK site with UK plans priced in pounds, and it says it handles personal information in line with UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018 (Clio UK). The AI features in the core product, which Clio calls Manage AI, include AI-generated client updates and billing help. They work on the data already in your Clio account.

Clio says AI comes as part of every plan rather than as an add-on. The pricing page does not say whether prices include VAT; Clio's UK terms make the customer responsible for VAT (terms).

• Training. Clio says a firm's data "is never used for AI training or any other external purpose" (pricing FAQ). Clio Work uses third-party AI providers under zero-data-retention agreements (Clio Work pricing).
• Where data is held. Clio offers hosting in the European Union, Australia, the United States and Canada; no UK option is listed (data security). Clio's help centre says its AI features may process queries on servers outside your home jurisdiction, with the results stored in your region (AI features in Clio Manage).
• Certifications. SOC 2 Type II (pricing FAQ). Clio's trust centre dates its latest SOC 2 Type II report to the period June 2024 to May 2025 (trust centre).

• Ask Clio which region your account is hosted in, and whether AI processing outside it is acceptable for the firm's data. Clio's own help centre suggests taking advice before using the AI features if the firm has data residency obligations.
• Client updates written by AI go out in the firm's name. Paragraph 3.5 of the SRA Code of Conduct for Solicitors keeps a supervisor accountable for work done through others, so read them before they are sent.
